The Surprising Impact of Golf Ball Design on the Game

No doubt about it , Golf is a fairly straight forward game.  You use a club to hit a ball into the hole 18 times in fewer shots than the competition.  As in all sports there are gains to be made in performance through improving the equipment.

One can imagine how a golf club could be tuned for performance. Optimising the balance between club weight and swing speed will effect the force transfer to the ball.

Different sized club heads may work better for different swing styles. When it comes to the other part of the equipment equation, the ball, the doesn't seem much you can do, or is there

One can look at the effect of the golf ball in a couple of ways. For the business owner if a ball has a reputation of being pricey but good then you'll be happy to use them as logo golf balls as custom golf gifts for important golf playing customers.

Nothing will kill your reputation quicker than giving a cheap ball in that circumstance. But from a purely playing viewpoint price may not be everything .

Sometimes you'll find a pro that uses a mid price ball. Something in that ball matches the pro's style.

What are the features than can be exploited to improve a ball's performance.

Well even with the humble golf ball has become a focus for squeezing out as much extra performance as possible. In the top flight of the game matches and millions of dollars of prizes can be decided on just one or two shots.

It was once discovered that older balls with scratches and dents seemed to perform better than smooth new balls.  The modern ball has dimples where there were dents and scratches and these cause turbulence during the flight.

This turbulence forms eddies in the air that reduces the air drag on the ball.  As such the ball travels further.  This is of course good news if you use golf balls as personalised golf gifts.

A battered and old ball with your corporate logo may perform better but it doesn't really look the part.

With this simple fact why do we not have just one type of golf ball?.  This is far from the case.  There is a wide range of golf ball makers out there .

And each manufacturer offers better performance and features than the other. Golf ball technology is now close to rocket science .

A quick browse of the major vendors whom all supply balls to  professionals, amateurs and also logo golf balls to corporate golf event organisers, Srixon, Callaway, Srixon, Wilson, Titleist, Pinnacle offer many areas of focus on performance improvement.

Golf ball softness which aids control.  Improved golf ball velocity and extreme distance.  Better golf ball spin and responsive short game control.  Greater accuracy from the tee and green grabbing outer layer.

Multi-layer balls ensures channeling of the power from the club to the ball with minimal dissipation.

Dimples are off course a common feature. Dimples are not any old dimples, the shape and arrangements are tested aerodynamically.  There are even patterns within patterns.

Are we being blinded by technology, this is just a golf ball after all.  How will anyone apart from the real golfing professional know which one works for them?  For the average player the variation in your game could well nullify any benefit of higher quality balls.

Is it truly the case that the more expensive the ball the better your game?.
